Yemen – At least 17 people have lost their lives in recent floods in Yemen during 22 – 25 July. 3 people died after heavy rains in Bani Qais district in Hajjah Governorate washed away dozens of huts and tents in camps for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). Elsewhere, flooding caused material damages in Lahj, Shabwah and Abyan governorates. Heavy rain also affected the capital Sana’a, with flooding reported.

Bangladesh – Government and humanitarian agencies in Bangladesh report that 3.3 million people have now been affected by flooding that began in June. According to a report of 25 July by the Humanitarian Coordination Task Team (HCTT), 21 districts of the country have now been affected, with 16 of them seeing moderate to severe impacts. Flooding has inundated over 34,000 km2 of land, which amounts to 24% of the country. Almost 75% of Jamalpur district is flooded. Over 90 people have died in flooding since 30 June, including 41 children. Approximately 56,000 people have been displaced to 1,086 flood shelters.

Nigeria – At least 7 people have died in flash flooding and heavy rainfall in Niger state in central Nigeria. Local media reported torrential rainfall lasting several hours late on 24 July caused flooding and damage in Rafin Sanyi area of Suleja Local Government Area. Rain and flooding downed trees and power lines, causing electricity outages. According to a local government spokesperson, several houses collapsed in the area, trapping people in their homes. As of 25 July, 7 bodies had been recovered but more are feared missing. Rescue and recovery teams have been dispatched in the area in the search for survivors.

Vietnam – At least 5 people lost their lives after heavy rainfall from 20 July triggered flooding and landslides in northern Vietnam. Vietnam’s Disaster Management Authority reported flooding and landslides in Ha Giang and Cao Bang Provinces. Ha Giang City recorded 378mm of rain in 24 hours to 21 July, while Dao Duc recorded 395 mm and Cao Bo (both in Ha Giang Province) 401 mm.

USA, Mexico – As it weakened to a tropical storm Sunday morning, Hanna pushed inland through the Rio Grande Valley, leaving flooding and damage in its path in a wide swath of South Texas and northern Mexico.

India – More than 100 animals, including 10 one-horned rhinoceroses, have died in massive flooding at the famed Kaziranga game reserve in northeastern India, officials said. The flooding is the result of a monsoon that has dumped rain across parts of India, Bangladesh and Nepal.
