Historic Sea Level Rise

An international team of researchers has determined that the modern trend of sea level rise began globally as early as 1863, when the Industrial Age began to produce the first surge in greenhouse gas emissions.

Writing in the journal Nature Communications, the scientists say they examined tide records from 36 different regions around the world to find when and where the seas began to rise. They found it first started in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States between 1872 and 1894, and later in Canada and Europe. Sea level rise has mainly been driven by the thermal expansion of the oceans as the world warmed, as well as runoff from melting glaciers and ice sheets.

Dual Harvest

A new solar power technique being launched in Kenya shows how the sun’s energy can be harvested twice by placing solar panels above rows of crops.

Known as agrivoltaics, the arrangement generates electricity while providing the partial shade some types of crops need. It also helps the soil to retain moisture. Cabbages grown under the well-placed solar panels were a third larger and appeared healthier than those in control plots with the same amount of fertilizer and water. The agrivoltaics configuration also allows the panels to collect rainwater to be stored for later use.

Water Cycle Surge

New research suggests that the movement of water between the clouds, land and ocean due to climate change has intensified at twice the rate earlier predicted.

Writing in the journal Nature, scientists say that rising global temperatures have been making this process more extreme, with water moving away from dry regions toward wetter ones. This is driving more severe droughts in some areas while amplifying heavy rainfall and the resulting flood disasters in others.

The study found that between two and four times more fresh water has shifted since 1970 than what climate models had projected. “Changes to the water cycle can have a critical impact on infrastructure, agriculture and biodiversity,” says lead author Taimoor Sohail.

Volcanos

Roundup of Global Volcanic Activity – Ongoing Activity for the week 16 February – 22 February 2022

Aira – Kyushu (Japan) : JMA reported that at 1540 on 15 February an eruption at Minamidake Crater (at Aira Caldera’s Sakurajima volcano) produced plumes that rose 1.3 km above the crater rim and into weather clouds. Sulfur dioxide emissions were slightly high at 1,200 tons per day on 17 February. A very small eruptive event was recorded on 20 February.

Ambae – Vanuatu : On 18 February the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department (VMGD) reported that the cone in Ambae’s Lake Voui continued to grow and produce steam, gas, and ash emissions. Webcam images showed ash emissions rising to 3 km (10,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifting WSW the day before, according to the Wellington VAAC.

Davidof – Aleutian Islands (USA) : According to AVO the earthquake swarm that began on 24 January in the vicinity at Davidof continued at least through 22 February with a few small earthquakes recorded on most days. The swarm was either related to tectonic processes or volcanic unrest.

Etna – Sicily (Italy) : INGV reported that a thermal anomaly at Etna’s Southeast Crater (SEC) was first visible in webcam images at 0907 on 21 February, followed within an hour by weak Strombolian activity. Strombolian activity intensified and by noon lava fountaining was visible. An eruption plume had risen to 10 km above the summit and drifted SE. Lava overflowed the SEC at 1210 and traveled SW. The eruption plume reached a height of 12 km, drifted SSE, and caused ashfall in Viagrande (16 km SSE), Trecastagni (16 km SE), Milo (about 11 km ESE), Aci Castello (26 km SSE), and Zafferana (10 km SE). Sometime after 1300 lava fountaining ceased, though the lava flow continued to be fed. Another flow traveling E to an elevation of 2,900 m was visible in webcam images and by scientists observing the eruption in the field. Explosivity activity ceased in the afternoon. Weather conditions hindered views over the next day but by 1900 on 22 February webcam observations were again possible. Weak Strombolian activity at SEC was visible and the E lava flow had advanced.

Great Sitkin – Andreanof Islands (USA) : AVO reported that slow lava effusion at Great Sitkin continued during 16-22 February, though cloudy conditions often prevented satellite and webcam views. Lava flows had continued to advance down the S, W, and N flanks, and were 1,050 m, 930 m, and 220 m long, respectively. Lava flows were also active on the SSW flank. Seismicity remained slightly above background levels, and a few, daily, small local earthquakes were recorded during 19-21 February.

Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai – Tonga Ridge : Recovery efforts from the 14-15 January eruption of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai continued in Tonga. According to a news article, the main undersea international fiber-optic communication cable that had been severed in multiple places due to the eruption had been repaired by 21 February, and internet connectivity was restored by 22 February. Repairs had begun on 3 February to rejoin 5-6 pieces and replace a 55 km section of the cable that was missing and likely buried in sediment. A domestic cable that was located closer to the volcano may take months to repair. Another news article noted that over 200 fishing boats had been destroyed by the tsunamis; dozens of new boats had been gifted by international donors.

Karymsky – Eastern Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that a thermal anomaly over Karymsky was visible in satellite images during 10-11 February. The volcano was either quiet or obscured by clouds on the other days through 18 February.

Kavachi – Solomon Islands : Satellite data showed discolored water around Kavachi in the month of February, on three of four image acquisition dates. Discolored water fanned out short distances (around 3 km) mainly to the E on 4 February and to the WSW on 14 February. Cloudy weather prevented views of the vent area on 9 February. On 19 February a relatively narrow plume of discolored water drifted E and then dispersed about 6 km away.

Kilauea – Hawaiian Islands (USA) : HVO reported that lava effusion at the vent of the main cone in the lower W wall of Kilauea’s Halema`uma`u Crater continued at variable rates during 16-22 February. Effusion from the vent was very low or had paused from around 0000 on 16 February until about 0230 on 17 February. After another drop, the effusion rate was relatively stable at least through 22 February. The lake level fluctuated through the week, likely reflecting the lava supply along with periods of inflation and deflation. Short-lived lava ooze-outs were visible along the W margins of the lava lake and small flows from the W vent traveled S and W during 20-22 February.

Lewotolok – Lembata Island : PVMBG reported that the eruption at Lewotolok continued during 15-19 February. Daily white-and-gray ash plumes rose as high as 600 m above the summit and drifted E, W, and NW.

Merapi – Central Java : BPPTKG reported no significant morphological changes at Merapi’s lava domes, located just below the SW rim and in the summit crater, during 11-17 February. Seismicity remained at high levels. In the SW-flank Bebeng drainage there were as many as 105 lava avalanches that traveled a maximum of 2 km and three pyroclastic flows that extended 2.8 km.

Pavlof – Alaska Peninsula, Alaska : AVO reported that the eruption at Pavlof was ongoing during 16-22 February with lava effusion from a vent on the upper SE flank feeding flows on the E flank. Seismicity was elevated with periods of tremor detected and elevated surface temperatures identified in satellite images; both were consistent with continuing lava effusion.

Reventador – Ecuador : IG reported that a high level of activity continued at Reventador during 15-22 February, though cloudy weather conditions prevented visual observations during 20-21 February. Steam-and-ash plumes, often observed multiple times a day with the webcam or reported by the Washington VAAC, rose higher than 1.3 km above the summit crater and drifted in multiple directions. Crater incandescence was visible most nights; incandescent material was visible descending the S flank during 17-18 February.

Semeru – Eastern Java : PVMBG reported that eruptions at Semeru recorded at 0554 and 0709 on 17 February, 0558 on 18 February, 0551 on 19 February, and 0701 on 20 February generated ash plumes that rose 500-700 m above the summit and drifted N, W, and SW. The

Semisopochnoi – Aleutian Islands (USA) : AVO reported that low-level eruptive activity at Semisopochnoi’s North Cerberus cone continued during 16-22 February. Seismicity was elevated with low-level tremor, and occasional explosions, detected almost daily in both seismic and infrasound data. Weather clouds prevented satellite and webcam views of the volcano. Low-level ash clouds from the summit were observed in webcam images drifting N during 21-22 February.

Sheveluch – Central Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that a thermal anomaly over Sheveluch was identified in satellite images during 11-18 February.

Suwanosejima – Ryukyu Islands (Japan) : JMA reported that 102 explosions were recorded at Suwanosejima’s Ontake Crater during 14-21 February. The explosions produced ash plumes that rose as high as 1.8 km above the crater rim. Ashfall was reported in Toshima village (3.5 km SSW) during 14-18 February, and nighttime crater incandescence was visible during 18-21 February.

Turrialba – Costa Rica : OVSICORI-UNA reported that at 0412 on 19 February an eruption at Turrialba’s Cráter Oeste produced a small ash plume that rose 100 m above the summit and drifted W. Minor ashfall was reported by park rangers in Parque Nacional Volcán Irazú. An eruptive event was recorded later that day at 1624, though weather clouds prevented visual confirmation.

Wolf – Isla Isabela (Galapagos) : IG reported that the eruption at Wolf continued during 15-22 February. Daily thermal alert counts, as high as around 250, indicated active and advancing lava flows on the SE flank.

Yasur – Vanuatu : The Wellington VAAC reported that on 17 and 19 February ash emissions from Yasur were intermittently visible in webcam and satellite images rising as high as 1.2 km (4,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifting SW.

The Butterfly Effect

Sparked by global warming and other forms of climate change, tropical butterflies are starting to arrive in Hong Kong and Taiwan in greater numbers, while temperate-zone species like the monarch appear to be dwindling in the region, conservationists told RFA. Seven new butterfly species were discovered in Hong Kong in 2021, including swallowtails, gray butterflies, and nymphs; most of them were tropical species.

But the changes are forcing out butterflies that need a temperate climate to breed in, experts said. Where once one saw tens of thousands of monarch butterflies spending the winter, as recently as 2013 and 2014, numbers have fallen sharply in recent years.

Mass Bird Crash

Hundreds of yellow-headed blackbirds were filmed plummeting to the ground in the northern Mexican city of Cuauhtémoc, with some dying in impact. Others were able to recover from the crash and fly off.

After viewing terrifying security camera video of the incident, some blamed the tragedy on pollution or even new 5G mobile signals. But experts later said the flock was driven into houses and adjacent pavement by a predatory bird that made them swirl tightly and dive bomb to the surface.

Global Warming

Arctic Refreeze

Bitter cold around the North Pole so far this year has caused Arctic sea ice to expand to its greatest coverage since 2009. Despite the rapid expansion during January to 13.5 million square km, it was still the sixth-smallest January extent in 43 years of satellite observations.

Experts believe it will be only a temporary recovery from the long-term shrinking trend caused by the Arctic warming at up to three times the global average. This is in contrast to the near record-low January sea ice coverage observed around Antarctica. NOAA climate scientists say that overall, the planet experienced the seventh-warmest January since reliable records began in 1880.

Antarctic Greening

Scientists have documented what they call a “striking” expansion of Antarctica’s two native flowering plants, driven mostly by a rapidly warming climate.

Writing in the journal Current Biology, scientists document how Antarctic hair grass and Antarctic pearlwort have expanded on Signy Island, off the Antarctic Peninsula, as the average summer air temperature increased by almost 2 degrees Celsius since 1960. They note that this spread will alter the local ecology, including changes in soil chemistry, the bacteria and fungi content in the soil and how organic material decomposes.

Pharma Pollution

Active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) that are being flushed into the world’s rivers in sewage are now a “global threat to environmental and human health.”

Scientists at the University of York say they tested water from more than 1,000 sites in more than 100 countries and found many of them polluted with such APIs as epilepsy and diabetes drugs and painkillers. The report also warns that the increase in antibiotics found in rivers could also lead to the more “superbugs.” Hot spots were in Pakistan, Bolivia, Kenya and Ethiopia. But Madrid, Dallas and Glasgow, Scotland, were in the top 20% of contaminated cities.

Volcanos

Roundup of Global Volcanic Activity – Ongoing Activity for the week 9 February – 15 February 2022

Aira – Kyushu (Japan) : JMA reported that nighttime crater incandescence at Minamidake Crater (at Aira Caldera’s Sakurajima volcano) was visible during 7-11 February. Sulfur dioxide emissions were 700 tons per day, slightly low. An eruptive event at 1620 on 13 February produced a plume that rose 1 km above the crater rim.

Davidof – Aleutian Islands (USA) : An earthquake swarm, either related to tectonic processes or volcanic unrest, began in the vicinity of Davidof on 24 January. The swarm continued at low levels during 9-13 February with small earthquakes recorded on most days. A shallow M 2.9 earthquake located 5 km N of the volcano was recorded on 11 February.

Dukono – Halmahera : Based on satellite and wind model data, the Darwin VAAC reported that on 13 February ash plumes from Dukono rose to 2.1 km (7,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted SW.

Etna – Sicily (Italy) : INGV reported that a notable eruption at Etna’s Southeast Crater (SEC) occurred during 9-10 February and changed the morphology of the cone. The eruption began with incandescence from explosive activity within SEC that was visible in webcam images at night during 9-10 February. Sporadic ash emissions rose above the crater. Lava began to effuse at 1520 on 10 February and flows descended WSW. Strombolian activity varied in intensity and frequency, though at 1700 there was a clear intensification. Lava flows continued to be fed and had descended S and SE to 2,900 m elevation. Strombolian activity transitioned to lava fountaining at around 2140, with fountains rising 1-1.5 km high, and ash plumes rising to 12 km (39,400 ft) a.s.l. and drifting W. Two pyroclastic flows, visible at 2140 and 2219, traveled a few hundred meters SE towards the Valle del Bove. At 2226 a larger pyroclastic flow expanded 1.6 km S and SE and covered the northernmost 2002-2003 craters, reaching 2,750 m elevation, and damaging a hut along the way. Lava fountaining ceased at 2300. The ash plume slowly dispersed W over the next few hours and the lava flow continued to be fed, reaching 2,850 m elevation. A new deep scarp opening to the SSW was formed during the eruption, overprinting the smaller breach that was on the SW crater rim. The new scarp was about 500 m long and had variable widths of 100-190 m. Weak and sporadic explosive activity continued from the lower part of the scarp. Tephra fell in areas to the NW (particularly at Maletto, 15 km NW) and as far as Sant’Agata di Militello (50 km NW) and Capo d’Orlando (50 km NNW), along the Tyrrhenian coast. At 1125 on 11 February a small vent opened at the SE base of the SEC, emitted ash, and produced a short, thick lava flow that traveled a few tens of meters SE.

Fuego – South-Central Guatemala : In a special bulletin, INSIVUMEH reported that an effusive period at Fuego began on 9 February, producing lava flows than descended the Ceniza drainage on the SSW flank. There were 2-9 explosions per hour recorded during 8-9 and 1-15 February, generating ash plumes that rose as high as 1.1 km above the crater rim. The ash plumes mainly drifted 10-15 km N, NE, S, SW, and W causing almost daily ashfall in areas downwind including Morelia (9 km SW), Panimaché I and II (8 km SW), Santa Sofía (12 km SW), El Porvenir (8 km ENE), Sangre de Cristo (8 km WSW), and La Rochela. Periodic shock waves rattled structures in communities around the volcano. Block avalanches descended the Ceniza (SSW), Seca (W), Trinidad (S), and Taniluyá (SW) drainages. Explosions ejected incandescent material up to 100-300 m above the summit. The effusive activity intensified by 14 February with periods of elevated activity lasting minutes to hours. Strombolian explosions increased in frequency and intensity, gas emissions increased, and incandescence from the crater was visible at night through the early morning of 15 February. Peaks in seismic RSAM data mirrored the peaks in activity. Lava flows traveled as far as 200 m down the Ceniza drainage and produced block avalanches from the flow front.

Great Sitkin – Andreanof Islands (USA) : AVO reported that slow lava effusion at Great Sitkin continued during 9-15 February, though cloudy conditions often prevented satellite and webcam views. Seismicity remained slightly above background levels, and elevated surface temperatures were periodically identified in satellite images. A steam plume was occasionally visible in webcam images.

Ibu – Halmahera : PVMBG reported that the eruption at Ibu continued during 9-15 January. Gray-and-white ash plumes rose 200-1,000 m above the summit and drifted W and E. Strong rumbling sounds were heard during 8-9 January and minor ashfall was reported in a populated area just W of the volcano.

Kanlaon – Philippines : PHIVOLCS issued a special notice for Kanlaon on 9 February, noting localized earthquake activity on the lower NW flank. There were 11 very shallow earthquakes, with local magnitudes of M 0.9-2.1, recorded by the seismic network between 2012 on 8 February and 0900 on 9 February. Ground deformation data from continuous GPS and tilt measurements indicated slight inflation of the middle and upper flanks of the volcano since mid-October 2021; EDM and electronic tilt data reflected short-term deflation on the SE flank since December 2021 and January 2022, respectively.

Karymsky – Eastern Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that a thermal anomaly over Karymsky was visible in satellite images on 10 February. The volcano was either quiet or obscured by clouds on the other days during 4-11 February.

Kilauea – Hawaiian Islands (USA) : HVO reported that lava effusion at the vent of the main cone in the lower W wall of Kilauea’s Halema`uma`u Crater continued at variable rates during 9-15 February. Effusion had paused, but restarted at 0120 on 9 February when lava again began entering the lava lake. The lake level fluctuated through the week, likely reflecting variable lava supply along with periods of inflation and deflation. Effusion from the W vent paused during around 0900-1100 on 11 February.

Lewotolok – Lembata Island : PVMBG reported that the eruption at Lewotolok continued during 8-15 February. Daily white-and-gray ash plumes rose as high as 1.2 km above the summit and drifted E and W. Incandescent material was ejected 300-350 m in multiple directions, and rumbling and weak banging noises were heard.

Manam – Northeast of New Guinea : The Darwin VAAC reported that on 14 February ash plumes from Manam rose to 2.4 (8,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted SE.

Merapi – Central Java : BPPTKG reported no significant morphological changes at Merapi’s lava domes, located just below the SW rim and in the summit crater, during 4-10 February. Seismicity remained at high levels. In the SW-flank Bebeng drainage there were as many as 133 lava avalanches that traveled a maximum of 2 km and three pyroclastic flows that extended 2 km. Ashfall was reported in multiple areas within about 20 km to the S, SE, and E including the Cangkringan, Sleman and Musuk districts.

Nevado del Ruiz – Colombia : On 15 February Servicio Geológico Colombiano’s (SGC) reported that during the previous week seismicity at Nevado del Ruiz was at similar levels to the weeks before, characterized by periods of continuous volcanic tremor, harmonic tremor, long-period events, and very-long-period earthquakes, indicating movement of fluids. These earthquakes occurred in the vicinity of Arenas Crater. Additional earthquake signals indicating rock fracturing were located at Arenas Crater and in areas to the SE and had decreased in size and frequency since the previous week. Two periods of “drumbeat” seismicity, indicting growth of the lava dome, were recorded on 10 February. Gas-and-ash emissions were periodically visible in webcam images. A small explosion on 11 February generated an ash plume that rose above the crater. According to the Washington VAAC an ash plume rose to 7 km (23,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted N at 1130 that same day.

Pavlof – Alaska Peninsula, Alaska : AVO reported that the eruption at Pavlof was ongoing during 8-15 February with lava effusion from a vent on the upper SE flank feeding lava flows on the E flank. Seismicity was elevated with periods of tremor and elevated surface temperatures were identified in satellite images; both were consistent was continuing lava effusion.

Semeru – Eastern Java : PVMBG reported that the eruption at Semeru continued during 8-15 February, though weather conditions sometimes hindered views. Crater incandescence was visible during 8-9 February. Daily eruptive events produced white-and-gray plumes that rose as high as 500 m above the summit and sometimes drifted SE and N.

Semisopochnoi – Aleutian Islands (USA) : AVO reported that low-level eruptive activity at Semisopochnoi’s North Cerberus cone continued during 9-15 February. Seismicity was elevated with low-level tremor, and several small explosions were detected daily in both seismic and infrasound data, through 13 February. Steam and low-level ash emissions likely occurred daily, though due to weather clouds they were not confirmed in satellite and webcam images during 13-14 February.

Sheveluch – Central Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that a thermal anomaly over Sheveluch was identified in satellite images during 4-11 February.

Suwanosejima – Ryukyu Islands (Japan) : JMA reported that five explosions were recorded at Suwanosejima’s Ontake Crater during 7-14 February. The explosions produced ash plumes that rose as high as 2 km above the crater rim and ejected large blocks 300-400 m from the crater. Ashfall was reported in Toshima village (3.5 km SSW) during 11-14 February.

Whakaari/White Island – North Island (New Zealand) : On 15 February GeoNet reported that technicians recently repaired and upgraded equipment, improving the transmission of seismic and webcam data from Whakaari/White Island. The report noted that minor ash emissions from the active vents continued to be seen in webcam images. The lake had deepened due to recent wet weather conditions and mud geysering from one of the main craters was visible; mud geysering was common at the volcano during periods when the lake water was higher.

Wolf – Isla Isabela (Galapagos) : IG reported that the eruption at Wolf continued during 8-15 February. Daily thermal alert counts, anywhere from a few to over three hundred, indicated active and advancing lava flows on the SE flank.

Yasur – Vanuatu : The Wellington VAAC reported that during 12-13 February ash emissions from Yasur were visible in webcam and satellite images rising to 900 m (3,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifting S and SW.

Western USA megadrought is worst in 1,200 years

The extreme dryness that has ravaged the American West for more than two decades now ranks as the driest 22-year period in at least 1,200 years, and scientists have found that this megadrought is being intensified by humanity’s heating of the planet.

In their research, the scientists examined major droughts in southwestern North America back to the year 800 and determined that the region’s desiccation so far this century has surpassed the severity of a megadrought in the late 1500s, making it the driest 22-year stretch on record. The authors of the study also concluded that dry conditions will likely continue through this year and, judging from the past, may persist for years.

Chimp Healing

Chimpanzees have for the first time been observed treating wounds with a balm of crushed insects. Writing in the journal Current Biology, scientists say they saw the behavior among chimps in the West African nation of Gabon. They said the apes not only treated their own wounds, but also those of others around them.

One chimp named Suzee was seen inspecting a foot wound of her adolescent son before catching an insect out of the air, putting it in her mouth to squeeze it and then applying it on the wound. She later extracted the insect from the wound and applied it two more times. Other chimpanzees were also seen treating the wounds of others in the same manner. Biologist Simone Pika says the insects could contain unknown anti-inflammatory and soothing properties.

Croc Freedom

An Indonesian crocodile trapped with a tire around its neck for five years has finally been freed by rescuers in a Central Sulawesi river.

Conservation workers had tried since 2016 to capture the reptile and free it from the rubber necklace, which was believed to have been deliberately placed to trap the croc as a pet. But a local bird-seller named Tili eventually used chicken as bait and ropes to catch it. Dozens of nearby residents then pitched in to drag the animal to shore and cut the tire from its neck. A local conservation agency said Tili will be given a prize for his daring effort to free the croc from its misery.

Arctic Weather Blasts

Warmer Arctic winters due to climate change are triggering freak weather patterns that now chill areas as far south as subtropical parts of Florida and East Asia, a new study reveals.

An international team of researchers found that the new Arctic blasts are damaging the agricultural production of cereals, fruits, root vegetables and legumes in areas unaccustomed to such cold in winter. “This study highlights how complex the effects of climate change are,” said study co-author Gabriela Schaepman-Strub. “We have now discovered that this (Arctic) warming affects ecosystems thousands of kilometers away.”

Volcanos

Roundup of Global Volcanic Activity – Ongoing Activity for the week 2 February – 8 February 2022

Aira – Kyushu (Japan) : JMA reported that very small eruptive events were recorded at Minamidake Crater (at Aira Caldera’s Sakurajima volcano) during 31 January-4 February. Ejected incandescent material was visible at night during 4-7 February.

Ambae – Vanuatu : On 5 February the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department (VMGD) reported that the cone in Ambae’s Lake Voui continued to grow and produce steam, gas, and ash emissions. Images from two webcams (in Saratamata, Ambae Island and in Enar, Pentecost Island) showed the plumes rising above the summit and drifting S and SE.

Davidof – Aleutian Islands (USA) : An earthquake swarm, either related to tectonic processes or volcanic unrest, began in the vicinity of Davidof on 24 January. The swarm continued at low levels during 1-8 February with daily small earthquakes.

Etna – Sicily (Italy) : INGV reported that sporadic explosive activity at Etna’s Southeast Crater (SEC) resumed at 0115 on 30 January, producing diffuse ash emissions that rapidly dispersed near the summit, and weak Strombolian activity was visible the next day. Webcam views were intermittent due to weather clouds the next day, but by the morning of 2 February all activity had definitely stopped. Minor and variable gas emissions rose from the Northeast Crater, Bocca Nuova, and Voragine Crater.

Great Sitkin – Andreanof Islands (USA) : AVO reported that slow lava effusion at Great Sitkin continued during 2-8 February, though cloudy conditions often prevented satellite and webcam views. Seismicity remained slightly elevated. The flow field expanded with up to 100 m of advancement of the S, W, and N flank lava flows. Elevated surface temperatures were periodically identified in satellite images. A steam plume was visible in webcam images during 5-6 February.

Kilauea – Hawaiian Islands (USA) : HVO reported that lava effusion at the vent of the main cone in the lower W wall of Kilauea’s Halema`uma`u Crater continued during 2-8 February. The lake level fluctuated, likely reflecting variable lava supply along with periods of inflation and deflation. A small spatter cone, less than 6 m tall, located near the E end of the crater produced lava fountains that were 10 m tall in the evening of 1 February. The fountains fed a short flow confined to the E margin of the crater. Effusion from the W vent paused during around 0900-1730 on 2 February. During the rest of the week the effusion rate fluctuated; the lake continued to circulate, although less when the effusion rate was lower. Multiple ooze-outs of lava along the N, E, and S margins of the crater were visible.

Lewotolok – Lembata Island : PVMBG reported that the eruption at Lewotolok continued during 1-7 February, though weather conditions sometimes prevented visual confirmation. Rumbling and weak banging noises were heard throughout the week. Crater incandescence from active lava effusion was periodically observed. White, gray, and black ash plumes rose 100-400 m above the summit during 3-4 and 6-8 February. Incandescent material was ejected 300 m SE during 7-8 February.

Merapi – Central Java : BPPTKG reported no significant morphological changes at Merapi’s lava domes, located just below the SW rim and in the summit crater, during 28 January-3 February. Seismicity remained at high levels and earthquakes were more intense than the previous week. In the SW-flank Bebeng drainage there were as many as 133 lava avalanches that traveled a maximum of 2 km and two pyroclastic flows that extended 2-2.5 km; one lava avalanche also went 300 m NW.

Pavlof – Alaska Peninsula, Alaska : AVO reported that the eruption at Pavlof was ongoing during 1-8 February with lava effusion on the upper SE flank feeding a branching flow on the E flank. Seismicity was elevated with periods of tremor and elevated surface temperatures were identified in satellite images; both were consistent was continuing lava effusion.

Popocatepetl – Mexico : CENAPRED reported that each day during 1-8 February there were 25-77 steam-and-gas emissions with diffuse ash rising from Popocatépetl and drifting ENE.

Rincon de la Vieja – Costa Rica : OVSICORI-UNA reported that an eruption at Rincón de la Vieja was recorded at 1853 on 2 February. No plumes were visible due to weather conditions.

Sangay – Ecuador : IG reported a high level of activity at Sangay during 2-7 February, and seismicity was characterized by daily explosions, long-period earthquakes, and signals indicating emissions. Weather clouds and rain often prevented visual and webcam observations of the volcano, though almost daily ash-and-gas plumes were identified in satellite images by the Washington VAAC or in webcam views; plumes rose as high as 1.5 km above the volcano and drifted in multiple directions. Multiple daily thermal anomalies over the volcano were visible in satellite data. Several ash emissions were observed in satellite images on 8February; at 0430 an ash plume rose more than 7 km above the summit, the highest a plume had risen since the current eruption started in 2019. Ashfall was reported in areas to the NW, in the provinces of Chimborazo and Bolivar.

Semeru – Eastern Java : PVMBG reported that the eruption at Semeru continued during 1-8 February, though weather conditions often prevented visual confirmation. Crater incandescence was visible during 1-2 and 7-8 February. White steam-and-gas plumes rose as high as 1.2 km above the crater rim during 2-3 February. Eruptive events produced gray-to-white ash plumes that rose 300-700 m during 2-4 and 7-8 February. The active lava flow on the SE flank was 3.5 km long; avalanches from the end of the flow traveled 100-200 m down the drainage during 7-8 February.

Semisopochnoi – Aleutian Islands (USA) : AVO reported that low-level eruptive activity at Semisopochnoi’s North Cerberus cone continued during 1-8 February. Seismicity was elevated, and explosions were occasionally detected in both seismic and infrasound data during 4-8 February. Steam and low-level ash emissions likely occurred daily, though due to weather clouds they were only confirmed in satellite and webcam images during 1-2 and 5-8 February.

Sheveluch – Central Kamchatka (Russia) : KVERT reported that a thermal anomaly over Sheveluch was identified in satellite images during 28 January-4 February.

Suwanosejima – Ryukyu Islands (Japan) : JMA reported that volcanic plumes from Suwanosejima’s Ontake Crater rose as high as 2.2 km above the crater rim during 31 January-7 February. Ashfall was reported in Toshima village (3.5 km SSW).

Turrialba – Costa Rica : OVSICORI-UNA reported that at 1259 on 6 February a small phreatic eruption at Turrialba’s Cráter Oeste produced an ash plume that rose 100 m above the crater rim. A thermal anomaly from the floor of Cráter Oeste was identified in satellite images on 4 February. The anomaly was last seen in the same location on 25 January, and twice in 2021, during clear weather conditions; the location of the anomaly was the same in those images since March 2021, and likely represented a hot crack venting on the crater floor. Two incandescent points in the crater were visible in overnight webcam images during 7-8 February.

Yasur – Vanuatu : On 2 February the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department (VMGD) reported that sulfur dioxide gas emissions from Yasur’s active lava lake were detected drifting NW in satellite images.

Deforestation Is Flooding West African Coasts

Deforestation in Africa is occurring at about twice the world rate, with the continent as a whole losing about 4 million hectares every year. The loss of tree cover along Africa’s southwestern coast in particular has increased, mostly because of agricultural land use, urbanization, and conflict.

In the Amazon, which is also experiencing tree loss in a tropical environment, evidence indicates that deforestation contributes to a decrease in precipitation.

Coastal countries of southwestern Africa are experiencing the opposite effect. The frequency of storms in deforested areas in Ghana, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone has doubled since 1991. Forested areas in these countries have also experienced an increase in storms, but only by about 40%.

As trees have a cooling effect in the atmosphere, deforestation creates a warm area that draws in sea breezes from the ocean during the daytime, producing moisture. And there’s only one way for that moisture that gathers in the air to go. It has to go up, creating a perfect environment to trigger storms.
