Europe – Record-breaking gusts of up to 122 mph (196 km/h) were recorded in England Friday (Feb. 18) as the United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium and parts of the Netherlands and France face their worst storm in over three decades. Trees have collapsed, trucks and cars have toppled on their sides, and thousands of homes have been left without power as the storm Eunice pummeled coastal regions around the Atlantic Archipelago and Europe’s western coasts with wind, snow and heavy rain.
Brazil – Rising rivers and landslide threats have forced dozens of people to evacuate their homes in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil, over the last few days. At least 2 flood-related fatalities were also reported. Heavy rain began to fall on 15 February 2022. In a 24 hour period to 16 February, Linhares recorded 129.20 mm of rain, Rio Bananal 115.20 mm, Aracruz 103.38 mm and São Mateus 100.20 mm. In the following 24 hour period Ibiraçu recorded 106.20 mm and Aracruz a further 84 mm.
Madagascar – The National Office for Disaster Management (BNGRC) in Madagascar reports that at least 6 people have lost their lives after the passage of Tropical Storm Dumako across the country. Meanwhile yet another storm is forecast to hit Madagascar’s shores some time next week. Tropical Storm Dumako made landfall over the Soanierana Ivongo District in Analanjirofo Region on 15 February 2022. A total of 5,095 people were affected, with 2,982 people displaced and 113 homes destroyed by the storm. Floods damaged a total of 983 homes in the districts of Toamasina I and II in Atsinanana Region. A bridge in Toamasina II district was also damaged by floods.
