Record Drought – Chile

Chile announced an unprecedented plan to institute water rationing in the capital of Santiago as the country suffers through its 12th consecutive year of drought. “A city can’t live without water,” said Claudio Orrego, the governor of the Santiago metropolitan region. “And we’re in an unprecedented situation in Santiago’s 491-year history where we have to prepare for there to not be enough water for everyone who lives here.”

Rotating water cuts of up to 24 hours could soon be possible for 1.7 million capital residents. He added that the effects of climate change may mean that the trend of less rainfall and mountain snow is here to stay.
