Reckless Messages
Scientists at Oxford University warn that current efforts to send high-power radio transmissions into space to say “hello” to extraterrestrial intelligences could actually bring Earth under an alien attack.
Several such transmissions have already been made since the 1970s, with some efforts being approved by NASA. But new digital technology means detailed messages that give the planet’s location, its life forms and examples of human knowledge could prove tempting to extraterrestrials. Anders Sandberg told The Telegraph that while chances the messages would be received are slim, any responses might not be what we were hoping for.
