Wildfires – New Mexico, USA

The McBride Fire in Ruidoso : Firefighters scouted the drought-stricken mountainsides around the New Mexico village on Wednesday as they looked for opportunities to slow a wind-driven wildfire that a day earlier had burned at least 150 homes and other structures while displacing thousands of residents and forcing the evacuation of two schools.

The Hermits Peak Fire spread nearly four miles to the east on Tuesday, growing to 6,276 acres by Tuesday night according to the Santa Fe National Forest. (Reports from other government sources put it at 7,900 acres.) The fire is 12 miles northeast of Las Vegas, New Mexico.

Wildfires – Colorado, USA

Amid critical fire conditions, two wildfires — the Bent’s Fort Fire and Fort Lyon River Fire — have burned thousands of acres in southern Colorado. Both fires started Tuesday. The Bent’s Fort Fire — also called Bent’s Old Fort Fire — is 2,200 acres and 10% contained as of 9:30 a.m. The Fort Lyon River Fire has burned about 2,400 acres as of 7 a.m. Wednesday.
