Wildfires – Washington, USA
Lightning storms last weekend sparked several wildfires on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation including one that spread across 9,000 acres. One of the largest fires was at Gable Mountain in the center of Hanford. The mountain is considered both a biological and tribal sensitive area, where workers are not allowed without authorization.
Wildfires – Arizona, USA
The Sawtooth Fire in the Superstition Mountains has burned 18,500 acres and forced nearby residents to leave their homes on Monday. Crews are fighting the wildfire by air and on the ground just two miles northeast of the Peralta Trailhead in the Tonto National Forest. Officials say lightning-caused the blaze on Sunday, and there are now at least 200 firefighters working it.
Wildfires – Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) tackled three separate wildfires on Monday involving up to 200 firefighters. The fires broke out at sites in Newry, Castlewellan and Armoy.
Wildfires – Jordan
Olive trees are among the most damaged by an extraordinary number of fires hitting one of the most important regions in Jordan for forestry and olive oil making. In the Jerash province, farmers believe that an area of 6,000 dunum (almost 1,500 acres) has already been devastated. While the destruction included oranges, lemons and other fruits, many centuries-old olive trees were caught in the firestorms.
