Plague – California, USA
El Dorado County health officials have been notified by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) that a South Lake Tahoe resident has tested positive for plague. This is the first case in California in five years.
Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever – Senegal
On Aug. 12, health officials reported a Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) in Senegal. The case was detected as part of the epidemiological surveillance system in the country.
Rabies in Elephants – India
Some 16 elephants have died from rabies in the past 3 weeks at Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve in Assam, India, according to Times Now News report. According to Park Director P.Shivkumar, the domestic elephants contracted the lethal virus from wild foxes in the park that are biting the animals. This has prompted a massive anti-rabies vaccination drive.
