In the Eastern Pacific Ocean: Hurricane 12e (Genevieve), located approximately 877 nm east-southeast of San Diego, is tracking north-northwestward at 09 knots.

In the Western Pacific Ocean: Tropical storm (ts) 08w (Higos), located approximately 57 nm west of Hong Kong, is tracking northwestward at 10 knots.

China – Heavy rain affected Sichuan Province in South West China from 15 August, causing flooding along the Yangtze river and its tributaries, and resulting in the evacuation of over 200,000 people. Authorities say the Three Gorges Dam is facing the most severe floods since it was built. In a statement last week, the country’s Ministry of Emergency Management (MEM) said that 219 people have died or are missing and over 63.4 million have been affected due to floods since June.

Bangladesh – In a report of 19 August, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said that over 220 people have died and over 167,000 families remain displaced after this year’s monsoon flooding in Bangladesh. More than 1.27 million houses have been partially or fully damaged by the floods and over 167,000 families remain displaced. In addition, over 170,000 hectares of agricultural land have been affected.
