Spain – Civil Protection in Catalonia, Spain, reported severe flash floods in areas of Montsià and Baix Ebre on 01 September 2021. Fast flowing flood waters swept through streets in Alcanar, dragging along cars, trees and furniture. Images shared on Social Media showed around 6 wrecked cars that had been swept from the town and dumped onto the beach. Catalonia’s regional weather service Meteocat said 233.5 mm of rain fell in Alcanar in 24 hours on 01 September, including 77.7 mm in 30 minutes. The nearby town of Port dels Alfacs recorded 51.5 mm of rain in 30 minutes. Other areas of Spain also saw severe weather, including thousands of lighting strikes and heavy rain. Train services between Madrid and Toledo were interrupted.
USA – While parts of Louisiana are still under water after storm surge and torrential rain from Hurricane Ida, remnants of the storm have moved north, dumping heavy rainfall and causing flooding in parts of Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Maryland. Destructive floods hit parts of Southwest Virginia in the previous 24 hours.
India – At least one person has died and many more reported missing after heavy rain caused flash floods in parts of Maharashtra state in India. Meanwhile in the north of the country 5 people have died and 2 are still missing after a landslide in Uttarakhand. The Girna river and tributaries broke their banks. Flooding also affected parts of the city of Jalgaon, bringing traffic to a standstill and causing damage to property and businesses. Flooding was also reported in parts of Ahmednagar district.
