Nile Barrier

Egypt has constructed a series of natural sand barriers to hold back the rising Mediterranean from the Nile Delta, which in recent decades has been inundated by winter storm surges and heavy rains. Such flooding is becoming more frequent in the world’s coastal areas as global heating causes sea levels to rise.

The new dike system is 70% complete and stretches for more than 70 km across the areas of Egypt’s breadbasket that are most vulnerable to seasonal floods. Reuters reports that reeds and local vegetation have been planted in the sand to hold the barrier together and to promote biodiversity.
