Measles - Romania and Italy

Europe has reported more than 14,000 measles cases since January 2016, including 35 deaths, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). While some 16 EU/EEA countries have reported outbreaks, two countries account for the vast majority of cases – Romania and Italy.

In Romania, the total number of confirmed measles cases July 7 is 7,647, including 31 deaths.

In Italy, the Ministero della Salute reports 3,346 cases and 2 deaths since the beginning of the year. Ninety-five percent of those infected were unvaccinated or under vaccinated.

Dengue Fever - Peru

In a follow-up on the dengue fever outbreak in Peru, the National Civil Defense Institute (INDECI) reports the total number of dengue confirmed cases countrywide is 20,930 while 42,297 are reported as probable. Piura is the most affected region with 9,632 confirmed cases and 32,886 un-confirmed (37 deaths confirmed).

Alaska - Trichinosis from Walrus Meat

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials are warning the public of the risk of eating undercooked game meat after two outbreaks of trichinosis over the last year in western Alaska were tied to consuming walrus meat. The outbreaks sickened 10 people.

It was the first time since 1992 that multiple-case outbreaks of trichinosis were associated with walrus, which can only be hunted by Alaska Natives for subsistence or handicraft purposes.

Trichinosis is contracted by eating raw or undercooked meat from animals infected with a microscopic roundworm. High heat kills the parasite.
