South East Asia – At least 2 people have died in flash flooding in Vietnam after heavy rainfall brought by Tropical Storm Sinlaku. Meanwhile hundreds of homes have been flooded as the storm dumped heavy rainfall making its way over Laos and Thailand. According to Thailand’s meteorological department, the storm is now expected to move towards Myanmar, where flooding from heavy monsoon rainfall has recently affected thousands of people in recent days.
India – Flooding in the state of Uttar Pradesh has worsened over the last few days, with over 300 villages now affected. Further heavy rain has fallen in river catchments since then, in particular in Nepal. According to India’s Central Water Commission, as of 03 August 2020 the Ghagra, Rapti and the Ganges rivers were flowing above severe flood alert levels in 5 locations in the state. Government officials report that 331 villages have been flooded in 12 districts.
Yemen – Floods triggered by heavy rain killed at least 17 people early Tuesday in eastern Yemen. The health ministry’s office in Marib province said eight children were among the dead. A state of emergency was declared at all hospitals in the region.
