Wildfires – Chernobyl, Russia
Wildfires raging around Ukraine’s crippled Chernobyl nuclear power plant caused a local spike in radiation but did not affect levels in the capital of Kiev or other nearby areas, according to Yegor Firsov, Ukraine’s ecological inspection service chief.
Firefighters battled blazes across 50 acres inside the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, which may have been deliberately ignited. That area of Ukraine is currently experiencing an extended period of dry weather.
