Chinese Snake Trade

China’s ban on the sale of wild animals because of the coronavirus crisis has nearly wiped out the local economy of an area known for breeding snakes for food.

While experts say the disease probably didn’t emerge directly from snakes, Reuters reports factory and backyard snake farms around Zisiqiao village in Zhejiang province are no longer in business. They had been a key source of the reptiles for restaurants and traditional medicine.

Intensive snake farming has resulted in an increase in the transmission of parasites and various infectious diseases, according to a recent Wuhan University study.
