Haiti reports increase in cholera cases

Through the first week of September, Haiti has reported 26,799 suspected cholera cases, including 242 related deaths for 2016, according to data from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

Scrub typhus reported in Chile

In January 2015 and again in early 2016 three cases were discovered in Ancud, according to a Noticias report. Scrub typhus, caused by the bacterium Orientia tsutsugamushi, which is transmitted by chiggers encountered in high grass and brush, is endemic in northern Japan, Southeast Asia, the western Pacific Islands, eastern Australia, China, maritime areas and several parts of south-central Russia, India, and Sri Lanka. More than 1 million cases occur annually.

Zika Virus - Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand

The Singapore National Environmental Agency (NEA) reported eight additional locally transmitted Zika virus cases on Wednesday, bringing the outbreak total to 341.

In Taiwan, the Central Epidemic Command Center for Zika Virus (CECC for Zika Virus) announced the seventh imported Zika case identified in Taiwan.

In Thailand, the health ministry announced Tuesday that the kingdom has recorded some 200 Zika cases since the beginning of the year.
