Volcanos

Roundup of Global Volcanic Activity

Kilauea (Hawai'i): The lava lake in Kilauea's Halema'uma'u crater at the summit caldera has risen to its highest level since May 2015, as a current inflationary phase continues.

The surface of the lava lake was at 13 m (43 ft) below the floor of Halema'uma'u late yesterday afternoon and rose further to only 5–6 m (16–20 ft) this morning. It is now easily seen from Jaggar Museum. If the level continues to rise, it might soon overflow onto the crater floor.

Piton de la Fournaise (La RĂ©union): A new eruption has begun at the volcano this morning. An eruptive fissure opened on the upper north side of Dolomieu, generating a curtain of lava fountains along the fissure feeding several lava flows directed north and northwest. The eruption began at 08:41 local time according to a statement of the prefecture. It came without much warning, as it had only been preceded by a short period of tremor starting from 07:30 local time triggering a first alarm, while there had been no particular precursory signs during the days before. Public access to the Enclos, as usual, has been closed by authorities.
