Global Warming

Cold Storage

Large chunks of ice from melting glaciers, which are predicted to entirely disappear in the decades to come, are being airlifted to Antarctica for safekeeping.

Since bubbles in these ancient glaciers are frozen records of our past atmosphere, scientists have constructed an Antarctic ice bunker to keep them safe for future research.

The first sample was collected from a glacier at Col du Dôme, just below the peak of Mont Blanc — the highest summit in the European Alps.

It will join other samples taken in the Bolivian Andes and eventually be stored near the French-Italian Concordia Research Station on the frigid Antarctic Plateau.
